It’s the tooth!

Nicolas Ruston’s work features in De$ire exhibition at London’s Holster Projects gallery.

DE$IRE features works which explore contemporary sexual ideologies: our understanding and expressions of our sexuality as defined or constricted by society and as shaped by the saturation of sex and sexuality into mass media channels.

Says the artist:

“This show came about as it was based on sexual ideologies, in my case in the mass media.”

It is a “case study” and, so that we can be clear on this, he “wasn’t doing it for the shock value”.

Fritzl, guilty of incest, enslavement and murder, serving a life sentence in prison, is not the show’s theme. Really. He is just doing the PR:

“The sexual part of the Josef Fritzl story was sold as a commodity, which is very much the way the commercial world works. But the thing I was really engaged by was the fact that the children of Elisabeth had been born into an environment where their only window to the world was through the TV, through the mass media.”

Well, not quite. Their window on the world was also provided by their dead old dad, who would pop down to rape mum. And what did they watch on the telly?

As the years went by, Fritzl would have his way with his daughter in a padded room while their children watched television, the one luxury he allowed them. Sometimes, in a grotesque semblance of a happy family, Elisabeth and the children would watch the television with Fritzl, who enjoyed motor racing.

Had only Fritzl told the world that it was not a heinous crime but an art installation we may heave looked benevolently on him.

Ruston aims to “try and imagine what it was like to be in that environment if your only interpretation of the outside world was through the TV… If you only ever saw the sun rise on TV, you would only ever see the trees or nature on TV. I was trying to create a fantasy world in this very claustrophobic place. The lighting is a baby pink, quite cold. I wanted it to be a bit cold and confusing.”

“I also wanted to illustrate the difference between making love and pornography. I think that is a metaphor for the way people relate to the mass media.

“For example, you look at the hoards of people who were in tears Michael Jackson’s death. These are people who had never met Michael Jackson, but they thought they had met him, they thought they had grown up with him, they thought they knew him. These are the people who have hundreds of friend on Facebook. That is the sort of phenomenon that interests me.”

However, all three can still renew their application to appeal, the Court of Appeal confirmed.

The show’s producers  are being sued by  Sony, Universal and EMI, which claim the daytime show has used more than 1,000 songs without licences.

Police have contacted the Football Association (FA) over an admission by former striker Matt Le Tissier that he was part of a failed betting scam.

In his autobiography, Taking Le Tiss, he admitted gambling on the time of the first throw-in in Southampton’s 2-0 win at Wimbledon in April 1995.
